The Myles of Smiles Music Mentorship Project began as a series of open mic sessions stimulating growth and activity in the local music scene. In 2018, the society launched the Open Mic initiative offering emerging musicians and BC’s next generation of talent opportunities to grow and develop their skills. Popping up in relaxed comfortable settings in historic Fort Langley, including Maria’s Gelato in spring 2019 and moving to outdoor locations throughout the village during the summer season, the sessions grew with a local following of talented musicians joining in on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, the Creative Compass team were unable to proceed with their planned events in the spring/summer 2020 season due to the unavailability of suitable sites to host a COVID friendly event. The society will be moving to a virtual musical showcase of local talent, this fall/winter when the weather gets cooler and the community heads indoors. The mainstage performances will be combined with the Myles of Smiles Open Mic, featuring our multi-talented following of musicians and songsmiths and introducing local newcomers through a pre-submission process. The mainstage performances will be professionally filmed by local Langley production team, All in One Productions from their Fort Langley studio location in early November and launched on November 28th, 2020 together with new Open Mic submissions for a musical showcase of local talent.

Open Mic submissions to be included in the musical extravaganza can be sent to in the form of a clear video recording. Song submissions must be under 4 minutes in length and be submitted together with the registration form.

The Myles of Smiles program continues to foster growth in the local music industry and to develop BC talent focusing on collaborations with industry partners and community stakeholders.

The Myles of Smiles Open Mic – The Online Edition

Creative Compass Society would like to invite musicians and songsmiths to share their talent with the community. Send in a video recording of your selected song and we will add your performance to the Open Mic spotlights in our showcase of local talent. Please ensure recordings are clear, landscape format and under 4 minutes. Upload your video to a cloud service (Dropbox, WeTransfer, or Google Drive) and send in the completed form submission together with a link to your video file.

The Myles of Smiles Open Mic – The Online Edition is organized by Creative Compass Society, a non-profit organization whose mission is to connect emerging talent with community partners fostering shared learning opportunities across all arts disciplines. The Myles of Smiles Music Programs are inspired by Myles Jordan Seib, who passed away from complications of a brain tumour at the age of 29. Myles, a multi-talented musician who shared his music, smile and love through connections made throughout his life, is the spirit behind the music.

The series will be hosted by 2020 Community Theatre Coalition Best Actor award winner, Paul Cowhig and feature a line up of past regular Myles of Smiles participants together with both emerging and established musicians in Open Mic spotlights. The Myles of Smiles Open Mic launched to the community on Saturday November 28th, 2020 with 4 episodes and returned June 6th for the summer of 2021 with MainStage performances by local musicians – Hugh Barbour, Jessica Mai, Dave Mercer, Ava Hamill, Tom Hammel, Tom Welsh, Mark Schurch, Garth Johannesson and Warren Hunter. Additional July performances will feature Bruce Coughlan on July 11th, children’s entertainer Penny PomPom on July 18th and the Petersen Duo on July 25th. All performances launch Sundays at Seven and can be viewed at at any time after.

The Myles of Smiles Music Showcase July performances are presented with support from SoundON, Creative BC, and the Province of British Columbia.

“Unfortunately in spring/summer 2020 the society was unable to host our regular event similar to past years as planned” says Creative Compass president, Brigitte Seib, “As the weather cooled and people headed indoors, the society pivoted to a virtual format. We did not want to end 2020 without showcasing some of the talented musicians who have supported the project in the past and also presenting an opportunity for any local talent within our own community to join us in spreading Myles of Smiles during this difficult year. We will continue our Online Edition of the Myles of Smiles Showcase in 2021 and return to in-person events in the near future.”
